This fall, CAA members Renaye Johnson, Thea Jue, Janice Davis, and Karen Giorgianni teamed up to create a new mural entitled "Chupcan Village." The mural was unveiled on October 6th at the re-opening of the newly renovated Concord Historical Society Museum at 1928 Clayton Road.
Commissioned by the Historical Society, the mural is a scene inspired by the indigenous people who first settled the East Bay region, based on an earlier design from The Utility Box Project, a collaboration between CAA and the City of Concord. The artists researched historical documentation of the Chupcan people before sketching their new design and then scaled it up for the 6' x 7' mural. They worked simultaneously on elements of the painting from August through September for the Museum's October unveiling.
Congratulations to Renaye, Thea, Janice and Karen for collaborating on this historical mural, a pictorial reference to the people and the land before Spanish colonization. You can read more about the mural project in the October 4th issue of the Diablo Gazette. Thanks to CAA member David Scholz for the story and photos.
